Energy Switching in Queens: Lower Your Bill in Astoria, Flushing, and Beyond

Queens is the borough where the utility question actually gets complicated. ConEd serves some areas. National Grid serves others. Both sides have options. Here's how to figure out which is yours.

Two utilities, one borough

Queens is the only NYC borough with a split utility landscape. ConEd serves the western and central portions, including Astoria, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Ridgewood, and parts of Forest Hills. National Grid serves the eastern and southeastern portions, including Jamaica, Flushing, Bayside, Howard Beach, and the Rockaways.

The cleanest way to find out which you have: look at the top of your electric bill. If it says "Con Edison," you're in ConEd territory. If it says "National Grid," you're in National Grid territory. Enter your zip code in the calculator and we'll confirm it.

Either way, you have the same fundamental option: switch your electricity supply to a licensed retail supplier and pay less per kWh.

For ConEd customers in Queens

If you're in Astoria, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, or Elmhurst, ConEd delivers your electricity. ConEd's standard supply rate in early 2026 runs around $0.14 per kWh. Multiple suppliers are currently offering rates in the $0.09-0.11 range for Queens zip codes in ConEd territory.

For an Astoria or LIC apartment spending $130/month on electricity, switching can save $200-350 per year. The process takes about 10 minutes. Nothing shuts off. ConEd still maintains the infrastructure.

For National Grid customers in Queens

If you're in Flushing, Jamaica, Bayside, or Howard Beach, National Grid delivers your electricity. National Grid's default supply rates are comparable to ConEd's in early 2026. The same supplier options are available for your territory, and the savings math is similar.

The one thing to note: make sure you're comparing suppliers licensed to serve National Grid territory. Some suppliers only operate in ConEd territory. The calculator filters this by zip code automatically.

Queens-specific considerations

Queens has more renters per capita than almost any borough in the US. If your electric bill is in your name, you can switch regardless of whether you rent. If electricity is included in rent, you can't switch directly, but you can share this with your landlord.

Flushing and Jackson Heights have particularly dense concentrations of residents with higher-than-average utility costs, partly due to older building stock with less efficient infrastructure. The savings from switching are often above average in these neighborhoods because baseline usage is higher.
